If you've been researching your options for pain relief, hormonal support, or stress management, you've probably hit the same wall many women do: trying to figure out what's actually covered by insurance and what isn't. It's a fair question, and an important one — you deserve to make this decision with clear information, not guesswork. So, let's walk through exactly how insurance coverage works in Ontario, and where yoga therapy fits into the picture.
What OHIP Does and Doesn't Cover
Let's start with the simplest fact: OHIP does not cover massage therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, or yoga therapy. Physiotherapy is a little more nuanced — OHIP does fund physiotherapy, but only through specific government-funded clinics, and only for people who meet narrow eligibility criteria, such as recent hospitalization or being a senior. For most Ontarians managing chronic pain or ongoing wellness needs, OHIP simply isn't the pathway to these services.
What Extended Health Benefits Typically Cover
This is where most people actually access coverage. If you have extended health benefits through an employer, a spouse's plan, or an individual private plan, there's a good chance the following are included:
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT). Widely covered, provided the treatment is performed by a Registered Massage Therapist through the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Annual limits commonly range from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on your plan tier.
Physiotherapy. Also commonly covered when delivered by a Registered Physiotherapist, often bundled with other paramedical services under the same annual limit.
Acupuncture. Frequently included as well, particularly through employer benefit plans, though coverage varies more by insurer than RMT or physiotherapy does.
The common thread across all three is regulation. Insurance companies extend coverage to these services because the practitioners are regulated health professionals, licensed and overseen by a professional college. That regulatory oversight is what allows an insurer to treat the service as legitimate healthcare rather than a general
wellness activity.
So Where Does Yoga Therapy Fit In?
Here's the honest answer: in Ontario, yoga therapy is not currently a regulated health profession the way massage therapy, physiotherapy, and acupuncture are. That means, in most cases, a standalone yoga therapy session isn't something you can submit
directly to your extended health plan the way you would an RMT or physiotherapy receipt.
There are a couple of exceptions worth knowing about. Some clinics offer yoga- informed treatment delivered by a Registered Physiotherapist, in which case it may be billable as physiotherapy if it's part of a formal treatment plan. And some naturopathic or
health spending account plans offer broader coverage for complementary therapies, so if you have one of those, it's worth checking your specific plan documents.
For most people, though, yoga therapy is best understood as an out-of-pocket wellness investment — similar to a gym membership, personal training sessions, seeing a nutritionist, or a spa day. We believe in being upfront about this rather than letting you find out after booking. What you're paying for isn't a service bundled under someone else's regulatory umbrella — it's individualized, one-on-one care built entirely around your body, your symptoms, and your goals, delivered right in your home.
What We Provide
Every session comes with a detailed receipt. While it typically won't be eligible for extended health reimbursement the way an RMT or physiotherapy visit would be, some clients are able to use these receipts toward a health spending account or a broader wellness benefit, depending on their specific plan. We always recommend checking directly with your provider before booking if this is a factor for you, and we're happy to answer any questions about how our receipts are structured.
Investing in Care That's Built Around You
We know that cost is a real and valid consideration, especially when you've already spent money on treatments that didn't deliver lasting relief. Our hope is that by being transparent now, you can make the decision that's right for you with full information, not surprises down the road.
